Have you been watching the WEG dressage competition?  The Lusitanos and Andalusians are well represented by many countries. Brazil brought their famous Lusitano stallion “Portugal” and Spain brought their “Fuego II” who got nearly 74%.

Brazil continued their team with Lusitanos and Spain had more Andalusians and, if I remember, one Lusitano. In addition, Australia came with a Do Retiro Lusitano (from Villa Do Retiro where many of our horses were bred.) Another name familiar was Dos Pinhais, the breeder who bred our horse Ursula, and our young mare Amaretta has the breeding from this farm.

Zotti came from the snowy cold of the midwest to sunny California for Christmas. (See December 22 post) But Andalusian, Bendito III, had his first snow fall for Christmas. He looks warm and comfy in his new winter blanket.

Nola sent a picture from Kansas with the following caption:

We had lots of snow this week…and Benny had his first day playing in
the white stuff. He was mildly amused with the  whole thing for a California
Boy…

December 1, 2009 starts the USDF 2010 horse show season. If the results from the first show is any indication, our horses and riders are going to have fun improving and progressing this coming year. The first show was the Holiday Dressage Special, managed by Cornerstone Event Management at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center  December 5-6, 2009. Each horse rode the same test both days and each horse improved their score from one day to the next.

First, congratulations to Dorriah Rogers on her first dressage show. She rode Ribbons in Training Level test 1 (Adult Amateur) and earned first place!

Second, congratulations to three-year-old Landame (a.k.a. Lilly). It was her first time at a horse show and she handled all the new excitement with ease. Rebecca Raede showed Lilly in Training Level Test 1 (Jr.) and earned first place.

Rebecca Raede competed Elmegardens Ziam at the Prix St. George FEI test (Jr/AdAm). The two seem to be performing better every month, Rebecca and Ziam won the FEI Horse Show High Point for the Junior/Adult Amateur division.

Amaretta is a Lusitano barely four-years-old and she has taken to showing like an ol’ pro. Keeley Mircetic rode Amaretta in the USDF Second Level Test 1. The two scored in the mid 60’s earning second place.

Tom competed Ultriz Interagro in the Prix St. George Open class. Ultriz continues to mature and scored second place with a score in the upper 60’s in this large class.

This summer Lisa Sidwell visited from London. After many years it was great to see her. She looked at our horses and fell in love with the Lusitano Stallion Ultriz.

We just got word that Lisa has been accepted in a the judge’s training program in England to become a Dressage judge. We wish you the best Lisa.

After several years of planning and construction, Tom and Nancy McCormick have their new home and barns built in New Mexico. It was time for their horses to come on over. But not without a fond good-bye from those of us who love them too.

Here’s Tom with his long-time friend, Silvina, an andalusian mare trained to Grand Prix.

Gustavo will miss his roping partner, Recheio Do Retiro, who’ll now be seen on trails in the New Mexico landscape.

Keeley Mircetic sends good thoughts and best wishes to her friend, Ultimo Do Retiro, a 2000 Lusitano Gelding who will now be Nancy McCormick’s trail partner in New Mexico.

It’s Autumn and the Dressage Shows are ended for the season. Time to play. Remember, Lusitanos are bull fighting horses in Portugal so becoming a western cutting horse for a play day is easy.

Here’s Tom Valter on Ultimo, (a chestnut Lusitano trained to USDF 4th level in dressage), then Gustavo on Recheio (A white Lusitano trained to FEI Prix St. George in dressage), finally Keeley Mircetic on Amaretta (a young lusitano trained to USDF 2nd level in dressage.)

But today, they are cow ponies. Having a good time. Thanks Dan Duponde for the use of your cows.

Bendito leaving California

First thing in the morning, Bendito III got a bath and a fresh braiding, so he would be all ready for his trip. He left from Los Angeles on Tuesday morning and showed up in Wichita Thursday morning thanks to Bob Hubbard Horse Transport. Okay, and thanks to the check Nola wrote to Bob Hubbard.

‘Benny’ looked good coming off the truck and Nola is very happy to have him home. Of course, the best way to make yourself at home is to roll in the dust.

Three Amigos at Fiesta

Three Amigos at Fiesta

Finally we get to catch up on the next show in line and the first show of the season for the Andalusian Lusitano Horse Show Association (IALHA). Every year, Cinco de Mayo celebration in Los Angeles coincides with the FIESTA OF THE SPANISH HORSE.

Who can resist the three amigos (above) Tom Valter, Nola Foulston, and Gustavo.

This year Tom won the Lusitano Championship on Ultriz Interagro. He got a few Reserve Championship,s too, but he wasn’t happy about that. Ultriz was looking good! Tom wanted him to win fist place. Amaretta started her show career, performing well in a riding class. Ultimo came out for a class or two.

The best part was that Nola Foulston came out from Kansas for the show. She introduced herself to the IALHA folks and they all enjoyed meeting her. It wasn’t hard when, in tow, she brought her new stallion, Bendito III. Out of a huge class, Bennny won a Reserve Championship for Andalusian Stallions 6 and over. Keeley showed Bendito and did a terrific job. It was a wonderful weekend.
